Under Armour was founded in 1996 by Kevin Plank, a former University of Maryland football special-teams captain who had been frustrated by the soaked, heavy cotton T-shirts worn under football pads. Plank developed a synthetic moisture-wicking shirt in his grandmother's basement in Washington, D.C., and sold the early production runs out of the trunk of his car to former teammates who had moved into NFL careers.
