Starbucks opened its first store in 1971 in Seattle's Pike Place Market, founded by three partners — Jerry Baldwin, Zev Siegl, and Gordon Bowker — who had met at the University of San Francisco and shared an interest in high-quality coffee. The original store sold roasted coffee beans, tea, and spices, not brewed drinks. Howard Schultz joined the company in 1982 and pushed the founders to add an Italian-style espresso bar concept, which they declined to pursue; Schultz left to start his own coffee bar chain called Il Giornale in 1985, then bought Starbucks back from the founders in 1987 and merged it with Il Giornale under the Starbucks name. From the original six Seattle stores, Schultz grew Starbucks into the largest coffeehouse chain in the world. Headquartered in Seattle, Starbucks now operates more than thirty-eight thousand stores globally.
Starbucks Rewards is the foundation of cost-effective regular use — the program is free, and stars earned per dollar can be redeemed for free drinks and food at thresholds that work out to a meaningful effective rebate depending on usage patterns. Loading money onto the Starbucks app to pay (rather than paying with a credit card directly) earns more stars per dollar than card-direct payment. Members get free refills on hot or iced brewed coffee and tea during the same store visit. The Happy Hour events, announced in the app, offer half off select drinks for a few hours on rotating days. Birthday rewards land as a free drink of any size. Bringing a reusable cup deducts a small amount and earns extra stars. The catering menu prices below the equivalent individual orders for the same volume.
The Starbucks promotional calendar centers on the seasonal beverage launches — Pumpkin Spice Latte in late August, Holiday Drinks in early November, and the spring lineup in March each trigger introductory bonus star promotions. The Buy One Get One free events run several times a year on rotating drink categories and are announced in the app. Double-star days for Rewards members produce twice the points per purchase. The post-holiday gift card promotions in early January sometimes return bonus credit on gift card reloads. Happy Hour events run roughly monthly with category-specific half-off windows.
