REI was founded in 1938 in Seattle by Lloyd and Mary Anderson, mountaineers who had been frustrated by the high cost of importing quality climbing gear from Europe. The Andersons organized a buying cooperative with twenty-one fellow climbers — paying a one-dollar lifetime membership fee — to import an Austrian ice axe at a more reasonable cost. The cooperative model has remained REI's foundational structure: members pay a one-time fee, share in annual dividends based on full-price purchases, and elect the board of directors. Headquartered in Issaquah, Washington, REI operates more than 180 stores and an online site, and the cooperative now has more than twenty-three million members. The company is best known for its outdoor specialty assortment in hiking, camping, climbing, cycling, and skiing, alongside the in-house REI Co-op brand of apparel and gear that competes directly with the major outdoor labels.
REI Co-op membership is a one-time lifetime fee, and the annual dividend (typically a percentage of full-price purchases) returns to members each March. For anyone spending meaningfully each year at REI, the membership pays for itself within the first year. The REI Garage section is the outlet, and Garage prices are often well below standard pricing on returned, prior-season, or scratch-and-dent items. The famous REI return policy is one year for members and ninety days for non-members on most items, with worn gear accepted if it doesn't perform as expected. Members get access to free REI Outdoor School classes and Adventure trips at member-only pricing. The bike shop offers free tune-ups for the first year on new bikes purchased at REI. Stacking the member dividend with sale pricing is the standard maximum-savings configuration.
REI's biggest events are the Anniversary Sale in May, the 4th of July Sale, the Labor Day Sale, and the Members-Only sales tied to Black Friday and Cyber Week — and these are when the deepest discounts hit on Co-op private-label gear and major brands. Garage Sales (the in-store version) run periodically at most stores with deeply discounted returns and damaged goods sold to members only. The post-Christmas markdowns on winter apparel hit in late December and run through January. End-of-summer markdowns on camping and water sports gear in August through October produce strong pricing.
