Priceline launched in 1998 with the Name Your Own Price model, in which travelers bid on flights, hotels, and rental cars and accepted whatever inventory the merchant chose to release at that price. The model traded flexibility — travelers committed to non-refundable, undisclosed-airline, undisclosed-hotel-property purchases — for substantial discounts, and the William Shatner television campaigns helped establish the brand in late-1990s American culture. The company acquired Booking.com in 2005, an acquisition that ultimately came to dwarf the namesake U.S. business; Priceline Group renamed itself Booking Holdings in 2018 to reflect that shift. Priceline.com remains the U.S.-focused brand within the parent group and now operates more like a traditional online travel agency alongside the legacy Express Deals (the modernized version of Name Your Own Price) and Pricebreakers offerings. Headquartered in Norwalk, Connecticut.
Express Deals are the modernized version of the original Name Your Own Price mechanic — the property's identity is partially obscured (star rating, neighborhood, and amenities visible, brand name hidden) in exchange for substantially lower rates than the same property's published rate. The savings are real, but the booking is non-refundable, so use Express Deals only when travel plans are firm. The VIP membership tiers are based on completed bookings and unlock Member Deals at additional discounts off published rates on participating hotels. The mobile app sometimes shows app-only discounts. Pricebreakers shows three potential hotels with one randomly assigned at booking, all from the same star tier and neighborhood — meaningful savings if the three options are all acceptable. Reading the cancellation policy and the listed amenities is critical because Express Deals do not allow modifications.
Priceline's deepest single-event sales align with Cyber Week, when Express Deals add stackable percentage discounts on top of the already-discounted opaque rates. The Big Daily Deals refresh every twenty-four hours with curated discounted rates for limited-window booking. Post-holiday booking in early January for travel through April produces the strongest beach-destination pricing. Last-minute booking (within seven days of stay) sometimes triggers deeper Express Deals discounts as properties release unsold inventory. Mid-week travel consistently prices below weekend travel.
