Hotels.com began as TravelNow.com in 1991, founded as one of the first travel-focused dot-com properties. The company rebranded as Hotels.com after acquiring the domain in 2001, and was itself acquired by Expedia parent USA Networks in 2002. Hotels.com became part of Expedia Group when that entity was spun out, and it has operated as a sister brand to Expedia.com ever since. The brand built its identity around the Welcome Rewards program, which historically offered a free tenth night after ten paid nights — one of the simplest and most generous loyalty mechanics in online travel. That program has now been folded into Expedia Group's unified One Key program. Headquartered in Dallas with operations integrated into the broader Expedia organization, Hotels.com remains a meaningful U.S. and global accommodations site with deep inventory across hotel chains and independent properties.
One Key replaces the legacy Welcome Rewards program, and OneKeyCash earned on Hotels.com bookings is now redeemable across Expedia and Vrbo as well, which expands the redemption flexibility. The Member Prices, formerly Secret Prices, surface to logged-in members and discount on participating properties — always log in before searching. The mobile app sometimes shows additional app-only discounts. The Hotels.com price-drop tracking, where available, refunds the difference if the same property's rate drops after booking. Free cancellation versus non-refundable rates: the cheapest rate visible is usually non-refundable, and the gap between refundable and non-refundable is typically a modest percentage. The Vacation Rentals tab now surfaces Vrbo inventory through the unified Expedia Group ecosystem.
Hotels.com runs flash sales several times a year with curated hotel discounts for travel within defined windows. The Black Friday and Cyber Monday stretch produces the biggest sitewide percentage discounts of the year. The shoulder seasons in spring and fall consistently offer better pricing than peak summer or winter holiday weeks. Mid-week stays price lower than weekend stays in business-heavy cities. The post-holiday stretch in early January discounts beach destinations heavily for travel through March. Bundling hotel with flight or rental car on Expedia (where the underlying inventory overlaps) sometimes prices below the standalone hotel rate on Hotels.com.
