The Home Depot was founded in 1978 in Atlanta by Bernie Marcus and Arthur Blank, both former executives of the Handy Dan home improvement chain who had been fired in a corporate dispute. With backing from financier Ken Langone and entrepreneur Pat Farrah, the founders opened the first two stores in suburban Atlanta with the warehouse-format and broad assortment that would define big-box home improvement retail. The chain grew at extraordinary speed through the 1980s and 1990s, expanding nationwide and then into Canada and Mexico. Headquartered in Atlanta, Home Depot is now the largest home improvement retailer in the world by sales, with more than two thousand stores. The company has built deep relationships with the professional contractor segment alongside its DIY consumer base, and its Pro Xtra loyalty program serves licensed trades with bulk pricing, dedicated checkout, and account management.
Pro Xtra is the loyalty program for contractors and frequent buyers, and the volume pricing it unlocks on lumber, drywall, and bulk materials is meaningfully better than walk-in retail prices. For consumer shoppers, the Garden Club and Workshops emails surface category-specific coupons, and the price-match policy will beat any legitimate competitor's lower price by a meaningful margin if presented at the register. The Home Depot credit card adds extended zero-interest financing on appliance and large-tool purchases. Open-box and clearance appliances sit in dedicated sections of most stores at substantial discounts, and asking a manager about scratch-and-dent inventory not currently displayed sometimes surfaces additional units. Online inventory is store-specific, and the website lets you filter by what's in stock at your local store. Returns run 90 days for most items with receipt.
Home Depot's Spring Black Friday in April is the single biggest event for outdoor power equipment, mowers, and patio furniture. The Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day weekends each anchor major appliance sales with bundle discounts that stack with credit financing. Black Friday week brings tool deals on DeWalt, Milwaukee, and Ryobi sets that represent the year's lowest prices on those brands. The Pro Days events in spring and fall offer extra rebates on bulk orders. End-of-summer clearance on patio and grill in late August and September produces deep markdowns.
