About GNC
GNC opened in 1935 as a small Pittsburgh health food store called Lackzoom, founded by David Shakarian to sell yogurt and honey at a time when both were unfamiliar products to most American consumers. The store gradually broadened its assortment into vitamins, supplements, and health foods, and expanded into a regional chain through the 1960s under the General Nutrition Centers name. GNC went public in 1980 and grew through the 1990s into the largest specialty retailer of vitamins and supplements in the United States. The company struggled financially through the 2010s as supplement competition shifted to Amazon and direct-to-consumer brands, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2020, and was acquired by Harbin Pharmaceutical Group of China. The brand has continued operating through the bankruptcy reorganization with a smaller store footprint and a refocused private-label assortment. Headquartered in Pittsburgh.
