About DoorDash
DoorDash was founded in 2013 by four Stanford students — Tony Xu, Stanley Tang, Andy Fang, and Evan Moore — who started by interviewing local Palo Alto restaurant owners about their delivery challenges. The first version of the service, called Palo Alto Delivery, was a single landing page with eight PDF menus and a cell phone number; the founders did the deliveries themselves. The company raised seed funding from Y Combinator the next year and grew rapidly through the late 2010s by focusing on suburban markets that earlier delivery startups had overlooked. Headquartered in San Francisco, DoorDash went public in 2020 during the pandemic-driven surge in food delivery and has since become the largest food delivery platform in the United States by market share, with expansion into grocery, retail, and convenience delivery alongside the core restaurant business.
