Dick's Sporting Goods opened as a single bait-and-tackle shop in 1948 in Binghamton, New York, founded by eighteen-year-old Dick Stack with a few hundred dollars borrowed from his grandmother's cookie jar. The store gradually expanded its assortment through the 1950s and 1960s into general sporting goods. Dick's son Edward Stack joined the business in 1977 and became CEO in 1984, then drove the chain's transition into the big-box sporting goods format that defined the modern company. Dick's went public in 2002 and acquired or eliminated most of its national big-box competitors over the following two decades, including the bankruptcies of Sports Authority and Sport Chalet. Headquartered in Coraopolis, Pennsylvania, Dick's is now the largest sporting goods retailer in the United States by sales, with the Public Lands and Going Going Gone subsidiary banners targeting outdoor and clearance customers respectively.
ScoreCard is the free loyalty program and accumulates points that convert to reward certificates redeemable at the register. The ScoreCard credit card adds extra points on Dick's-family purchases plus zero-interest financing on larger orders. The price-match policy beats any legitimate competitor's lower advertised price. The clearance sections at the back of most stores hold deep markdowns on prior-season apparel and footwear, and the markdowns deepen the longer items sit. The Going Going Gone clearance store concept sells deeply discounted Dick's overstock and is worth a visit if there's a location nearby. Returns run 60 days for most items with receipt; firearm and bow returns are heavily restricted. The team sports section runs separately from individual sports, and team-bulk pricing on uniforms and equipment requires asking a manager.
Dick's biggest promotional windows are the back-to-school stretch from late July through Labor Day, anchored by youth sports and athletic apparel; Black Friday week, with the strongest pricing of the year on home gym equipment and bikes; and the post-Christmas clearance on cold-weather apparel and winter sports gear. Father's Day produces strong golf pricing, and Memorial Day brings outdoor and camping discounts. The end-of-season cuts on summer items in late August and on winter items in late February run deepest. Friends and Family events with stackable percentage codes happen several times a year for ScoreCard members.
