Ace Hardware was founded in 1924 in Chicago by a group of independent hardware store owners — Richard Hesse, E. Gunnard Lindquist, Frank Burke, and Oscar Fisher — who pooled their buying power to compete with the larger chains of the era. Unlike most national hardware brands, Ace was structured from the start as a retailer-owned cooperative, in which the individual stores collectively own the wholesale operation. That structure has remained intact for a century. Ace expanded steadily through the twentieth century by recruiting independent operators rather than opening company-owned stores, and the model proved more resilient than most against the rise of Home Depot and Lowe's because individual Ace stores compete on neighborhood convenience and service depth rather than price. Headquartered in Oak Brook, Illinois, Ace now operates more than five thousand stores worldwide, the vast majority of them independently owned and locally operated.
Ace Rewards is the free loyalty program and earns points redeemable as in-store credit, with bonus points events running several times a year.
